St. Louis, MO – The former bishop of Belleville, Ill. will be installed today (Monday) as the new Archbishop of Atlanta.
Wilton Gregory recently celebrated his last mass in Belleville; he oversaw the southern Illinois diocese for more than a decade.
The Atlanta Archdiocese he's taking over has a larger Catholic population than Belleville (though it's smaller in land size).
Gregory is well-known for his term as President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which started a few weeks before the priest sex abuse scandal became national news.
