Jury Awards $43 Million in Car Gas Tank Lawsuit

By AP/KWMU

Edwardsville, Ill. – A Madison County jury has awarded the family of a Missouri man nearly $43.8 million. The man died when the gas tank in his Lincoln Town Car caught on fire after it was struck from behind by another car in July 2003.

The accident happened on Interstate 270 near Granite City; John Jablonski died in the crash. His wife, Dora, was severely burned.

The family of the Florissant, Missouri couple had sued Ford Motor Company, which makes the 1993 Lincoln Town Car. The lawsuit alleged the location of the car's fuel tank behind the rear axle caused the fire. The jury awarded the family the money on Tuesday.

Ford attorney Jim Feeney had argued that the fuel tank was in the best location for the Town Car.
