St. Louis, MO. – President Bush has nominated former House Speaker Catherine Hanaway as
U-S attorney in Missouri's eastern district.
Hanaway would succeed Raymond Gruender, who left to become a judge on the Eighth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Hanaway's appointment first must be confirmed by the Senate.
She helped lead the Republican takeover of the Missouri House in the 2002 elections. She then served as House speaker, the chamber's top position.
Hanaway ran for secretary of state last November, but lost to Democrat Robin Carnahan.
She earned a law degree from American University in Washington in 1990, then practiced law for three years before going to work for Senator Kit Bond.
