Hartford, Ill. – The state of Illinois has released $750,000 to help fund a tower near where Lewis and Clark started their journey 200 years ago.
The money will help finish the 180-foot tower; it will offer a vast view of the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers.
The tower is expected to be done in a year, just as the bicentennial of the expedition is ending.
The structure is located just north of the Lewis and Clark Historic Site in the Madison County town of Hartford.
The funding fulfills the state's promise of $2 million for the project.
