New Athens, Ill. man has planted 1,000,000 trees

NEW ATHENS, Ill. – The state of Illinois has given an award to a famer in New Athens for planting , by his own count, more than 1,000,000 trees during his lifetime.

Wayne Wildy has been named the winner of the Outstanding Tree Farmer award for 2005.

Wildy says he planted his millionth tree before his 30th birthday three years ago. He says he's not sure how many trees he's planted since then.

He credits a special machine he cobbled together that can plant one tree every four seconds, which Wildy says can translate into more than 7,000 trees on a good day.
