Committee in St. Clair Co. offers ideas to prevent vote fraud

Belleville, Ill. – A committee in St. Clair County has issued recommendations outlining ways to prevent vote fraud.

Those ideas come a month after the last of five former East St. Louis politicians was sentenced for vote buying.

The report recommends independent audits of election-day expenses; both parties would pay for the audits.

It also calls for establishing a countywide education program for voters and election workers. And it recommends cross-referencing voter rolls in St. Clair County and East St. Louis to ensure that voters cast ballots in the right district.

County Board Chair Mark Kern says the recommendations are "very doable." The county formed the committee after the five in East St. Louis were convicted last June.
