Holcim will break ground Friday on cement plant

St. Louis, MO – A ceremony Friday in Sainte Genevieve County will mark the start of construction on what will become the nation's largest cement plant.

Environmental groups opposed the Holcim project for years, saying plant emissions would harm St. Louis's air. But they later reached an agreement with the company and dropped their opposition.

Project leaders then had to go back to the company's board to get a final approval because the cost of the project had risen by nearly $300 million during the delay.

The now-$900 million plant along the Mississippi River will take three years to build.
