Bootheel county gets disaster declaration

Caruthersville, MO – President Bush has declared the Bootheel county of Pemiscot a disaster after last weekend's storms and tornadoes.

The city of Caruthersville took the brunt of the hit from a tornado on Sunday; Gov. Matt Blunt will visit the town today to survey the damage.

The declaration makes people in that county eligible for federal loans and grants to help pay for cleanup, temporary housing, and repairs.

Federal funding also is available to state and eligible local governments and some nonprofit groups on a cost-sharing basis in Andrew, Pemiscot and Pettis counties. That money could be used for debris removal and other emergency measures.
