Illinois lawmakers could be in line for hefty pay increase

Springfield, Ill – Illinois lawmakers could be getting pay increases of nearly ten percent even as they struggle to find enough money for next year's state budget.

Senate President Emil Jones said Friday he does not know yet whether lawmakers will turn down the increase recommended by the state's Compensation Review Board.

The board last week recommended the large increase for lawmakers and constitutional officers to make up for no inflation increases for the last three years.

Lawmakers must approve a resolution rejecting the increases or they go into effect.

Jones says he doesn't think it would be hard for legislators to justify the increase to voters in an election year.

But House Democrats are preparing a resolution to reject the increase and Governor Rod Blagojevich has already announced his opposition to it.
