Group launches opposition to tax restrictions

By Frank Morris, KCUR

Kansas City, MO. – A proposed Missouri constitutional amendment to restrict the tax collections, would stymie efforts maintain even basic state services say opponents of the measure.

The group Partnership to Protect Missouri's Future held simultaneous events across the state today (Wednesday) to launch its campaign against the proposed Article 14 amendment.

Kerri McBee, with the Missouri Budget Project says the Missouri proposal mirrors one passed years ago in Colorado the Tax Payer Bill of Rights, or TABOR.

She says it was disastrous.

"TABOR will undermine education, health care and other needs in Missouri, TABOR will not allow the state to grow with the needs of the economy, it ties the hand of our legislature," McBee said. "And TABOR will not allow the state to effectively prepare or respond to emergencies."

"Missourians in Charge" counters that the proposal would simply check growth in state spending, insuring that increases are reasonable and predictable.
