St. Louis, MO – St. Louis-based Ameren has shut down its nuclear power plant in central Missouri after high vibrations were detected in the reactor's turbines early this morning (Friday).
The Callaway plant is the only nuclear plant in Missouri. Spokesman Mike Cleary says the closure is not an emergency. He says workers at the plant were reducing power there to replace some instruments. As power was reduced, the company detected high vibrations and manually shut the plant down.
Cleary says the plant remains closed. The nuclear plant is located in Fulton. Ameren provides electricity for 2.4 million customers in Missouri and Illinois.
