ACLU to sue over voter ID law

By Tom Weber, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – The ACLU in St. Louis plans to file a lawsuit today (Monday), challenging a new law that requires Missourians to present photo IDs before voting.

Critics of the law have said it will disenfranchise those who don't have an ID, but the ACLU is using a different legal tactic.

The group instead argues the law violates Missouri's Hancock Amendment because it illegally imposes requirements on local governments without providing money to meet those requirements.

Supporters have said the ID requirement will help prevent voter fraud.
