State wants Gateway to a Cure to refund ticket money

Jefferson City, MO – The state of Missouri wants a charity based in St. Louis to refund $1.4 million collected in a raffle for a mansion near Kansas City.

The founder of Gateway to a Cure, Lou Sengheiser, is accused of pocketing the raffle money instead of putting it into spinal cord injury research.

The charity was formed ten years ago, but its reputation has declined of late after it was unable to award homes and pricey cars advertised in its raffles.

In court papers filed Wednesday, Attorney General Jay Nixon lists 17 mortgage checks for Sengheiser's home in Imperial written on the charity's bank account and for other personal debts.
