SIU-Carbondale sees drop in enrollment

Carbondale, Ill. – Enrollment at Southern Illinois University's Carbondale campus is down two percent from last fall. The school, though, says it has a plan that it hopes will reverse the decline.

SIU Wednesday announced that its enrollment is 21,003 students. That's 438 fewer than a year ago.

The school's provost and vice chancellor, John Dunn, began overseeing the enrollment management functions of the school July First. He says he's already focusing on next fall, eventually hoping to boost SIUs student ranks to about 23,000 by 2010.

SIU also says it has hired two new recruiters for the Chicago area, Dunn added. Colleges at the school with increases in undergraduate enrollment will get corresponding budget increases next fall as incentives.
