Train derails near Salem, Ill.

Salem, Ill. – People in the southern Illinois town of Salem were allowed back into their homes this morning after a freight train derailment.

Fifteen train cars carrying chemicals derailed Thursday afternoon and officials evacuated dozens of people from their homes. Officials later determined nothing dangerous leaked.

Two tanker cars contained phosphoric acid, a chemical often used in processing food and soft drinks. Direct contact with its liquid form can be hazardous.

Salem is about 70 miles east of St. Louis.

A rail company spokesman also said the portion of Interstate 57 that had been closed was reopened early Friday morning.
