St. Louis, MO – There will be a visitation today (Friday) for bluesman Bennie Smith. The St. Louis native died this week at the age of 72.

He played with greats like Chuck Berry, Aretha Franklin, and a host of others; he also was a part of the local music scene at the beginning of rock and roll and during the heyday of St. Louis rhythm and blues.

John May, with the St. Louis Blues Society, told KWMU's Tom Weber that Smith also was a master at playing what's known as the "St. Louis sound."
