St. Louis, MO. – The new baby elephant at the Saint Louis Zoo will be known as Jade.
The zoo says more than 13,000 votes were cast in a contest to name the new arrival.
The ten-year-old Asian elephant Rani gave birth on February 25 to a healthy baby girl.
The public was invited to vote on one of three potential names: Emmy, Hana and Jade.
An elephant care team continues to work with first-time mom Rani to help her become comfortable in her maternal role, and to introduce the baby to the rest of the herd.
The baby is not yet on display.
