Emergency freeway bridge repairs to begin Monday

St. Louis – Construction crews will start retrofitting dozens of freeway bridges in Missouri starting Monday.
Last week an overhanging concrete sidewalk fell into Interstate 55 from the Delor Street overpass in south St. Louis because its steel pins had rusted through.
MODOT engineer Ed Hasinger says workers will put in new pins designed to resist rust.
"They'll be drilling holes through the sidewalk into the structure of the bridge and then putting steel pins in there and then epoxying them in to make them one continuous unit," Hassinger said.
On Friday MODOT awarded Gershenson Construction of St. Louis a $590,220 emergency contract.
The transportation agency inspected 119 bridges that have the same early 1960s design as the Delor Street overpass. Sixty of those will be reinforced.
