Voters in O'Fallon, Ill. to decide school bond issue Tuesday

By Tom Weber, KWMU

St. Louis – Voters in Illinois head to the polls Tuesday for local elections.

O'Fallon High School leaders are making a second bid to pass a bond issue for a new school.

This school would only be for ninth-graders, whereas the plan two years ago would have included a new four-year school.

Principal Steve Dirnbeck said the question two years ago failed in part because it would have split the district.

"I believe that the community was concerned it would divide our community; there's still a small-town feel even though O'Fallon isn't a small town anymore," Dirnbeck said.

The question that failed two years ago also would have included a tax increase, but this year's does not.

Dirnbeck says the current rate of growth would provide enough revenue to prevent a tax increase.
