Great Rivers Byway named a "wonder" of Illinois

By AP/KWMU

Springfield, Ill. – The Great Rivers Scenic Byway in the Metro-East has been listed as one of the "Seven Wonders of Illinois."

Illinoisans got to vote in the promotion from the state's tourism bureau. The 33-mile road hugs the Mississippi River through Alton, Grafton, Hartford, and Elsah.

Other wonders include Wrigley Field in Chicago, Rend Lake in Benton, and Starved Rock State Park in Utica. The state Bureau of Tourism will formally announce the wonders today (Monday).

There is one wonder for each of seven regions.

Others include: The Allerton Park and Retreat Center in Monticello; Black Hawk State Historic Site in Rock Island; and the Baha'i House of Worship in Wilmette.

There were no rules for what could be a wonder. But Jan Kostner, the bureau's deputy director, says voters seemed inclined toward natural wonders.
