Downs: no changes before school year starts

St. Louis, MO. – The president of the St. Louis Public Schools Board is asking the transitional board not to make changes before the school year begins.

Peter Downs says the elected board made some major decisions this year---including an early retirement offer for employees to avoid layoffs and the set-up of three new alternative schools.

Downs says he hopes the appointed transitional board will agree to let those decisions stand.

"Our thinking is that if the transitional board tries to change those now it will disrupt the start of school and we'd like to see school start smoothly in August," Downs said.

Downs also says all future proposals by either board should get approval by the other before being passed.

He says that will prevent legal issues after the courts rule which board has authority over the district.
