Edwardsville names new police chief

By AP/KWMU

Edwardsville, Ill. – A veteran police officer from the Chicago area will be Edwardsville's new police chief.

The Edwardsville City Council Tuesday unanimously approved the appointment of James Bedell to head force.

Bedell, 51, comes from the Chicago suburb of Naperville and succeeds David Bopp, who retired earlier this year after 38 years with the department.

Bedell begins his new job September 18th at a salary of $80,000. He says he wants to build on the strengths of a police department that's already service-oriented.

The search drew 65 applicants, mostly from Illinois but some as far away as Alaska, Mississippi and Pennsylvania.
