Carbondale, Ill. – Southern Illinois University says it won't challenge an recent ruling by an appeals court that said the university can't limit public access to staff employment contracts.

The court ruled last month that employment contracts are public and can't be excluded as personnel files.

The case was filed by two southern Illinois newspapers after the university denied a Freedom of Information Act request.

The university argued it had already given contract information on administrators like President Glenn Poshard. But they said actual contracts contain personal information that should be kept private.

Lower courts sided with SIU. SIU spokesman Dave Gross says the university felt it complied with public information laws.
