State Trooper pleads not guilty in vehicle deaths

By Associated Press

Belleville, IL – An Illinois State Police trooper today pleaded not guilty to reckless homicide charges in the traffic deaths of two sisters from Collinsville.

Matt Mitchell, 29, appeared before a St. Clair County judge in a wheelchair due to his own injuries in the November crash. He also pleaded not guilty to two aggravated reckless driving counts for injuries to two crash survivors.

Mitchell is charged in the deaths of Jessica Uhl, 18, and Kelli Uhl, 13.

Authorities say his police-issued car was traveling on Interstate 64 at 126 miles per hour last November when it swerved across the median into the path of the sisters' car. The teens died at the scene.
