Variable speed limits set for I-270 and I-255

By Maria Hickey, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – The speed limit on I-270 and I-255 will change later this spring based on traffic flow.

The Missouri Department of Transportation is installing 68 new digital speed limit signs beginning this week.

The speed limit is now 60 miles an hour but based on congestion it could go as low as 40 miles an hour during high volume times.

MO-DOT spokesman Andrew Gates says that will keep traffic moving.

"Moving traffic through at 40 miles an hour through a congested area will definitely keep people moving along faster than if as people are jockeying through a congested area, people come to a dead stop," Gates said.

Gates says the speed limit will not be changed until all of the digital signs are in place and have been tested.

He says that's likely to happen some time in early May.
