Nixon under investigation for possible spending misappropriation

Jay Nixon

By Adam Allington, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon's office is under investigation by the state office of administration for possible violations in spending procedure.

Last March Nixon issued a press release saying that his office had begun distributing $630,000 in grants to help seniors get free prescription drugs.

If that is the case, House Budget Chairman Allen Icet says Nixon would be in violation of spending procedure.

"Statewide officers do not have the authority to appropriate and expend funds without the approval of the General Assembly. So, what the attorney general seems to by doing by receiving funds and appropriating would be in violation of that," said Icet.

Icet says that any funding or grants that the state acquires are supposed to go into the treasury's general fund.

In this case he says it appears Nixon has taken that money and put it into a special account that is controlled by the AG's office.

Nixon's office has not returned calls asking for comment.
