More cases of meningitis linked to Missouri Army base
By Associated Press
Fort Leonard Wood, MO – Two more people with ties to Missouri's Fort Leonard Wood Army base appear to have meningitis, raising more concerns at the base where two soldiers have died this
month from the disease.
Both soldiers died of a bacterial form of the illness.
Officials on Thursday said a male nurse on the base has been diagnosed with viral meningitis, but is responding well to treatment.
Also, a Florida National Guard soldier who trained recently at Fort Leonard Wood is hospitalized with what appears to be meningitis. Officials say it isn't yet clear if it is viral or bacterial. The man is in stable condition at a hospital in Florida, but other details about his case were not released.
The Centers for Disease Prevention and Control has started giving vaccines and preventive antibiotics to more than 500 soldiers in the same company as the two who died.
