Lawmakers critcize MoDOT lobbying

By Marshall Griffin, KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – Two State Representatives are accusing the Missouri Department of Transportation of having state workers lobby for legislation while on state time.

The bill in question is the primary seat belt enforcement bill, MoDOT's top legislative priority this year.

State Representative Shane Schoeller (R, Willard) says it's not appropriate.

"If it's not illegal, I certainly don't believe that we should continue to allow it...there should be that separation there, if you have a state agency with state funds lobbying on agenda items like that with the people that work for them," Schoeller said.

Schoeller added that he and fellow House Member Brian Yates (R, Lee's Summit) may file a complaint with the Missouri Ethics Commission.

In response, MoDOT Director Pete Rahn issued a written statement, saying he strongly believes it's the responsibility of MoDOT and its employees to advocate for transportation issues and efforts that will save lives.
