Murder-suicide shuts down Poplar Street Bridge

By St. Louis Public Radio

St. Louis – A man shot and killed his girlfriend in the middle of freeway traffic near the Poplar Street Bridge Sunday afternoon.

Police say Tommie Hill of East St. Louis was fighting with Ashley Oliver, when he pulled his car to the side of the road, just east of the bridge.

Oliver ran for her life, and tried to get help from motorists. But Hill shot her dead in the middle lane of the freeway before turning the gun on himself.

Hill's 7-year-old daughter was in the back seat of the car. But she was not injured.

The eastbound lanes of I-64 were closed for about two hours.
