Clayton, MO – St. Louis County Police have confirmed that Paul S. Smith is the man who abducted four-year old Alisa Maier.

Smith shot and killed himself Wednesday when police officers went to his residence in rural Lincoln County.

St. Louis County Police Chief Timothy Fitch credited old fashioned detective work for leading investigators to Smith.

"The child's clothes had been changed. Based on that information, we were able to track that back to a Walmart store. We were able to get some video evidence that led us to Mr. Smith, which led us to his background, which led us to his address," Fitch said at a press conference Thursday.

Smith bought new clothes for Maier at the Walmart in Troy, Missouri. He also cut Maier's hair, before later leaving her outside a Fenton strip mall.

Smith was sentenced to 11 years in prison for sexually abusing a 10 year old in 1995.
