St. Louis, MO – Four veterans treated from the John Cochran VA dental clinic have tested positive for hepatitis.
During a briefing with Congressional staff today, VA officials indicated that of 1,022 veterans who have been tested and notified of their results, four have tested positive - two with Hepatitis B and two with Hepatitis C.
Three of these patients had never been tested before; one had tested negative several years ago, and is now positive.
The VA said that it was impossible to know with certainty whether the transmission occurred as a result of improperly sterilized dental equipment at John Cochran, but added that all veterans will receive care and counseling.
Yesterday, the Inspector General of the VA and the Government Accountability Office both agreed to launch official investigations into the Cochran matter
