Federal flood map hearing for St. Charles County

By Bill Raack, St. Louis Public Radio

ST. LOUIS – A hearing will be held Thursday on new federal flood maps for St. Charles County.

The preliminary maps lay out the areas that could be subject to significant flooding, and, more importantly, may determine if homeowners and businesses will be required to buy flood insurance. Federal Emergency Management Agency spokesman Josh deBerge said that new maps will likely put more property owners in the flood plain.

"We have high risk areas, we have medium risk areas and low risk areas," deBerge said, "And we feel if people know what their risk is, they can make better decisions to protect the assets that they do have in the flood plain."

Thursday's hearing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the St. Charles County Administration Building.
