ST. LOUIS – The city's top corrections official said that it appears the department followed all protocols in treating a female inmate who died at the St. Louis City Justice Center on Friday.
The department will continue to review the reports and statements from jail personnel who were present when 37-year-old Vanessa Evans died, according to corrections commissioner Gene Stubblefield. A full report is expected later this month. St. Louis police are also investigating.
Evans received treatment on Thursday after having breathing problems. Early Friday morning, she was allowed out of her single cell to get some air, and returned shortly afterward. An employee making regular rounds a short time later found Evans lying on the floor of her cell. She was pronounced dead at a hospital later on Friday.
