On day two of the government shutdown, it continues to cause headaches, including for a group of Missouri and Kansas veterans that flew to Washington.
The nonprofit Heartland Honor Flight organized the trip and the closed National World War II Memorial was the first stop Wednesday. The group was met by many Missouri and Kansas lawmakers, who helped them get inside the memorial where barriers had been set up.
"They have a right to be there. That memorial’s for them and I’m glad that those veterans got to go to that memorial today. And I hope the Park Service figures out that confrontation with veterans is, I’m sure it’s not where they want to be," Sen. Roy Blunt, (R-MO) told reporters Wednesday.
The Honor Flight Network is a non-profit program that brings World War II veterans from across the country to visit memorials around Washington. A group of veterans from the St. Louis suburb of Kirkwood will travel to the World War II memorial on an Honor Flight on Tuesday.
