Annual St. Louis Cabaret Festival opens with Marilyn Maye

The Sheldon

The Cabaret Project of St. Louis will host its annual St. Louis Cabaret Festival from July 22-25 at the Sheldon Concert Hall and for one night at the Kranzberg Arts Center. The festival will feature three musical artists, including Tony-award winning singer Marilyn Maye, who will perform during the event’s opening night celebration.

Maye is scheduled to showcase her rendition of Frank Sinatra’s songs entitled “Sinatra – Her Way.” She has only performed the piece in a select few cities outside of New York.

“Frank died 12 years ago and I kind of shelved it,” Maye said of “Sinatra – Her Way.” “Then when it became the 100th anniversary of his birth, we decided that was the time to present it.”

“Very few people singing today have the gravitas, the understanding musically, lyrically and emotionally of [Sinatra’s music],” said Tim Schall, producer and co-founder of the event. “Marilyn is one of the few people who can pull that off.”

“I’m thrilled that I’ve had the longevity,” Maye added. “It’s not been easy.”

Along with Maye, the St. Louis Cabaret Festival will also feature performances by Tony-winning singer and songwriter Jason Robert Brown and Broadway actress Christine Ebersole. The event will be Brown’s solo debut in St. Louis. He is best known for composing music for Broadway shows such as The Bridges of Madison County, Parade, and Honeymoon in Vegas. Ebersole, also a Tony Award winner, is best known for her performance in the Broadway productions Grey Gardens, Steel Magnolias and 42nd Street.
