The best new St. Louis restaurants to try during the month of March

The first question that St. Louis on the Air’s Don Marsh asked the Sauce Magazine team during Friday’s Hit List segment had to do with the word “cidery.”

The term was new to Marsh and understandably so, with St. Louis’ first such cider-focused brewery opening just about a week ago. Located in a former firehouse on Washington Avenue, Brick River Cider Co. was the first of four new, must-try restaurants that Catherine Klene and Matt Sorrell plugged during the discussion.

When Marsh asked if cider has seen something of a resurgence in recent years, Sorrell said he thinks that’s definitely the case.

“It’s an age-old beverage for sure, but a lot of people who maybe find beer too heavy or too bitter or whatever sometimes gravitate toward cider,” Sorrell said. “My problem with cider has always been that they tend to be a little bit sweet for me. But Brick River’s [are] more dry and tart and not terribly sweet at all.”

Klene talked up DD Mau, a new Vietnamese restaurant in Maryland Heights, as well as Simba Ugandan Cuisine.

Rounding out this month’s list was Benton Park newcomer Small Change, described as a more casual version of Planter’s House.

The conversation also touched on several anticipated openings, including Grand Tavern by David Burke, 1220 Artisan Spirits, Twisted Roots Brewing Co. and Old Herald Brewing Co., the first brewery to open in the Collinsville area.

“It’s exciting for me to see all these places that I drove through growing up sort of coming into their own,” said Klene, a native of Southern Illinois.
