The Environmental Protection Agency is following through on its commitment to fence off the former Carter Carburetor manufacturing plant in north St. Louis.

The 10-acre property is contaminated with asbestos, PCBs, and other industrial pollutants.

EPA Region 7 Administrator Karl Brooks committed to have the fence replaced at a public meeting this past August.

Weather permitting, a crew from Imperial Fence will begin removing the existing fence tomorrow, to replace it with a more secure one.

The new fence will be at least seven feet high and will be topped with barbed wire. It will run around the entire property, with the exception of a parking lot used by visitors to the Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club, which is located across the street.

The plant’s former owner, ACF Industries, will pay for upgrading the fence, which is expected to cost about $75,000.

The EPA is also negotiating a separate agreement with ACF to clean up the Carter Carburetor site.
