IL GOP Will Make Topinka Party Chair

By AP/KWMU

Springfield, IL – Leaders of the Illinois Republican Party are expected to pick State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka as their new party chief.

GOP leaders are to meet this afternoon and are expected to discuss the status of the chairmanship. Current chairman Gary MacDougal is expected to step aside to make way for Topinka.

Topinka was the lone Republican to win statewide office on an election day that saw Democrats win control of the Governor's office and the Legislature.

Topinka became the first woman to be elected Illinois Treasurer in 1994. She has also served as a State Representative and State Senator.
