The Lens: Bruce Conner, 1933-2008

This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon: July 8, 2008 - Bruce Conner, whose assemblages of found footage, end-rolls and other cinematic detritus made him one of the central figures of experimental/ underground film in the 1960s, has died at the age of 74.

News reports and obits will undoubtedly appear throughout the day (as of 6 a.m., The New York Times hasn't run anything, and the announcement in Conner's hometown San Francisco Chronicle, but Movie City Indie has the most complete coverage, with eight samples of Conner's work, including "A Movie," the 1958 film that launched his artistic reputation, and "America Is Waiting," a late-'70s music video produced for David Byrne and Brian Eno.

Watch, enjoy, and remember.
