Local Iraq War vet to be honored at All-Star game

This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, June 29, 2010 - Eric Greitens of St. Louis is this year's Cardinals "All-Star" in the 2010 "All-Stars Among Us" campaign sponsored by Major League Baseball and People magazine that recognizes Americans who serve their communities in extraordinary ways.

Greitens of St. Louis is a wounded veteran of the Iraq war who co-founded the Mission Continues, a nonprofit organization that helps wounded and disabled veterans find opportunities to continue serving their country. To learn more about his organization, go to www.MissionContinues.org.

Greitens will be honored along with 29 other All-Stars, each representing a Major League club, at pre-game ceremonies at the All-Star game in Anaheim, Calif., on July 13. They were the top vote-getters for their teams, chosen from a pool of 90 finalists by fans who cast 1.7 million votes in the national campaign.

Beacon staff writer Mary Delach Leonard  and features and commentary editor Donna Korando are combining to present Two Chicks Talkin' about the Birds, a look at baseball in St. Louis from the cheap seats by long-time fans.

Mary Delach Leonard is a veteran journalist who joined the St. Louis Beacon staff in April 2008 after a 17-year career at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, where she was a reporter and an editor in the features section.
