Amazon has announced plans to open two distribution centers in Edwardsville.

The company says the facilities are expected to eventually employ more than 1,000 full-time workers.

Each center will be more than 700,000 square feet.

One will handle online orders for big items like kayaks and big screen televisions. The other will deal with smaller items including toys and books.

Edwardsville Mayor Hal Patton thanked Amazon for choosing his city for the site of the company's newest fulfillment centers.

"The professional staffs from the city of Edwardsville, Madison County and the state of Illinois worked seamlessly with our local developers to deliver a much needed employment opportunity," Patton said.

The projects also mean hundreds of construction jobs for the area.

A check of Amazon's hiring website suggests the pay range for most of the full-time positions at the fulfillment centers will range from $11 to $13 an hour plus benefits.
