Mustard Seed, Actors' Studio Sweep STL Theater Circle Awards But Many Are Winners

Mustard Seed Theatre

Mustard Seed Theatre Company was the big winner at the second annual St. Louis Theater Circle Awards, held Monday night. But everyone there seemed to find reason to celebrate.

The COCA theater in University City drew a full house for local theater's special event, an evening of hearty applause, warm camaraderie and good-natured ribbing.

Five of Mustard Seed’s six awards were in the musical category for its production of “All Is Calm,” including Outstanding Production, Outstanding Director and Outstanding Ensemble. Sarah Godefroid Cannon won Outstanding Actress in a Musical for Mustard Seed’s “Jane Eyre.” (A full list of winners and nominations is below.)

St. Louis Actors’ Studio walked away with five awards, including four for the comedy “Waiting for Godot,” including Outstanding Production, Outstanding Ensemble, and Outstanding Actor, which went to Terry Meddows.

The Actors’ Studio also won for “King Lear,” with Bobby Milller named as Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama. After strolling to the podium, Miller joked about his casual dress, as noted on Twitter.

Miller’s remark was followed by a series of clothing-related commentaries, ending with another of his own.

Including the quick-witted Dorothy Marshall Englis’ win for Outstanding Costume Design in a Musical for “My Fair Lady,” Stages St. Louis won four awards. Two others were also for “My Fair Lady,” including Outstanding Actress in the role played by Pamela Brumley. Zoe Vonder Haar won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Musical for her role in Stages’ “Always…Patsy Cline.”

The St. Louis Repertory also took away four awards, including Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama, which went to Elizabeth Townsend for her role in “Good People.”

Also in the drama category, the Black Rep won two awards for “Whipping Man,” including Outstanding Production and Outstanding Ensemble. The Muny and Shakespeare Festival St. Louis also took home two awards.

The award for Outstanding New Play went to Nancy Bell, for her “Old Hearts Fresh,” written for Shakespeare Festival.

Special awards were given to Em Piro and the St. Lou Fringe Festival, and to Scott Miller for his body of work with New Line Theatre.

The St. Louis Theater Circle Awards debuted last year, replacing the Kevin Kline Awards, which recognized theater in St. Louis for seven years.
