SIUE Incoming Students To Pay More Next Year

SIUE will build a new $105 million health sciences building. The money comes from the Rebuild Illinois capitol plan, passed by the state legislature last year.

Incoming students at SIU Edwardsville will pay more next year. The SIU Board of Trustees approved a 5 percent tuition increase for next year's new students, which is a  2 percent decrease over what administrators had proposed.

SIUE Chancellor Julie Furst-Bowe says they'll have to make due with what the Board has decided, but this choice will send her back to the drawing board.

"We've been preparing different budget scenarios, just because of the unknowns at this time," Furst-Bowe said. "The amount of the state budget cut, for one, the pension situation, and certainly up until today, how much we could increase tuition was a factor."

Students will also see increases in several fees. Carbondale's incoming class faces a 3 percent increase in tuition.
