Every month, St. Louis on the Air holds a legal roundtable in which we discuss local, regional and national issues pertaining to the law.  This month, we took the show on the road to Saint Louis University's new downtown School of Law building.

Host Don Marsh and the panel of legal experts took questions from a live audience in the 12th floor court room. And with the new U.S. Supreme Court session scheduled to begin October 7th, there was a lot to talk about.

The panelists were:

  • William Freivogel, J.D., Director, School of Journalism; Associate Professor, Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, Southern Illinois University – Carbondale
  • Mark Smith, J.D., Associate Vice Chancellor and Director, The Career Center, Washington University in St. Louis
  • Joel Goldstein, J.D., Vincent C. Immel Professor of Law at St. Louis University’s School of Law.

The panelists first gave a general overview of the upcoming Supreme Court session, as well as an analysis of Chief Justice Roberts’ over-arching strategy.  Several cases on the U.S. Supreme Court docket were also discussed, including:

  • Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, a racial discrimination case.
  • McCutcheon v. FEC, a campaign finance case.
  • National Labor Board v. Noel Canning, a recess appointment case.
  • Town of Greece v. Galloway, a case on the legality of town council opening with prayer.
  • Cline v. Oklahoma Coalition for Reproductive Justice, an abortion rights case.

Missouri and St. Louis issues were also discussed, including:

  • Proposal to create separate gun courts in St. Louis was struck down by judges.
  • Gun Law Nullification Bill in Missouri House failed to gain veto override.

St. Louis on the Air provides discussion about issues and concerns facing the St. Louis area. The show is produced by Mary Edwards and Alex Heuer and hosted by veteran journalist Don Marsh.
