This weekend, comics fans will get the chance to celebrate their love for the literary art at local stores in observance of Free Comic Book Day. The celebration – which dates back to 2002 – was started to help bring new readers into independent comic book stores. Local shops and libraries across the city and county will observe the event and offer visitors free comics.

Apotheosis Comics & Lounge will host a free event Saturday, May 4 that'll include meet-and-greets with professional comic book artists, live music and lots of comic book giveaways.

Some of this year’s freebie titles include Riverdale, Stranger Things, Avengers, Doctor Who, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Wars Adventures and more.

On Friday’s St. Louis on the Air, St. Louis Public Radio reporter Shahla Farzan talked about the free event at the South Grand comics shop and comics culture in general.

Joining the conversation were Apotheosis’ owner and resident comic book expert, Martin Casas; Jim Mahfood, a St. Louis native who worked on “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”; and Maggie Thurston, an indie comic artist who also collaborates with Ink and Drink Comics, a St. Louis-based publishing group that produces anthology graphic novels.
