When 12-year-old Tamia Coleman-Hawkins is not in school or participating in extracurriculars, she’s baking batches of sweet treats for her customers.

Tamia is the founder and CEO of Mia’s Treats Delight. The Florissant native bakes brownies and cupcakes. However, her customer-requested cookies were a “game-changer” for her business. So far, Tamia’s customers have ordered 10 unique flavors, and she’s open to customizing more orders. 

“That's where my chocolate chip pecan and cranberry cookie came from,” Tamia said. “Me and mom were like, 'Chocolate chip pecan cranberry — uh, OK. A little weird, but OK.'”

This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, March 19, 2009 - For her, the creating begins early, while it's dark and still. She pulls out the eggs, butter and milk, gets the chocolate and the cocoa and starts baking.

For him, the creating comes in found chunks of time, after dropping the kids off at school, piping his wife's fresh cupcakes, washing dishes and helping as needed at SweetArt. Then, he walks to his studio down the hall, paint and canvases waiting.

Oh, we hardly recognized you. Look at how big you are! And that icing – that’s quite fancy. We see you everywhere these days – at hot little bars and bakeshops, sitting around all dressed up at weddings and fancy birthday parties. Seems like you’re doing well. Your parents must be proud.
