Jefferson City, MO – A judge who opposed the nomination ofJohn Ashcroft for US attorney general is poised to become the first black chief justice of the Missouri Supreme Court.
Ronnie White takes over as head of the seven-member court on Tuesday. He says his top priority is to encourage diversity within the state court system.
Jefferson City, MO – Planned Parenthood affiliates asked a federal court today to block a new Missouri law that would require women seeking abortions to wait 24 hours after consulting a physician.
The lawsuit seeks an injunction against enforcing the law, which is scheduled to take effect October eleventh, on claims it contains unconstitutionally vague and broad language.
The Legislature enacted the measure September 11 by overriding a veto of Democratic Governor Bob Holden.

St. Charles, MO – KLOU-FM host Paul Arca says he thought he had been hit by lightning.
He was riding in the van when its raised boom hit the wire. The van caught fire, but Arca and the driver were able toescape.
Arca is recovering at home. He was initially taken to a St. Charles hospital. The driver was not injured.
