Amtrak train derails near St. Louis

By AP/St. Louis Public Radio

St. Louis – Five people suffered minor injuries when an Amtrak passenger train derailed near St. Louis Sunday night.

Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said the last two coaches on the train left the tracks in Granite City, Ill.

The train had just left St. Louis for Chicago.

Magliari said five of the train's 63 passengers were treated at hospitals for minor injuries. Amtrak gave the rest of the passengers the option of going onto Chicago on charter buses or returning to St. Louis.

Magliari said it's not yet known what caused the two cars to leave the tracks. The train had two locomotives that were pulling five coach cars.

The track owners and Amtrak are investigating.
