Budget asks for sacrifices from city employees

By Rachel Lippmann, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – City of St. Louis employees would be asked to make several sacrifices in the proposed 2010 budget.

The city expects revenue to be flat next year. In order to meet increasing costs, employees are being asked to take as much as two weeks of furlough and forgo cost-of-living increases this year.

All departments except finance and public safety would have their budgets cut, and officials want to eliminate 121 positions, a couple dozen of which are currently occupied.

A spokesman for Board of Alderman president Lewis Reed said negotiations are ongoing with unions over the cost savings.
