Court Rejects City Lawsuit Against Gun Makers

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis – A Missouri appeals court has refused to reinstate the city of St. Louis' lawsuit that sought compensation from gunmakers, distributors and related trade groups for gun-related injuries.

A three-judge Missouri Court of Appeals panel Tuesday found that newly revised Missouri law bars such legal action.

The ruling upholds a St. Louis County judge's dismissal last October of the city's 1999 lawsuit. In that decision, the judge ruled such lawsuits would open what he called "a floodgate to additional litigation."

Last year, a bipartisan group of Missouri lawmakers overrode Governor Holden's veto to enact legislation barring lawsuits by governments against the gun industry over the social costs of gun violence.

It's not yet clear whether the city plans additional appeals.
